Cambodian Volleyball History

1. Establishment:

  • 1996: Establishment of Cambodian National Volleyball League (Disabled) Organisation.
  • 1997: Organisation and registration of Cambodia as a member nation of the International Paralympic Committee.
  • 2000: Organisation and first time participation of a Cambodian team in the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.
  • 2002: CNVLD registers as a Local Cambodian Non-Governmental Organisation under the  Chairmanship of Okhna Suor Pheng..

2. Cambodian National Disability Infrastructure:

  • 1996-97: Assistance in drafting Cambodian law on Disability (Access and Disability Rights).
  • 1997: Establishment of Cambodian Paralympic Committee

3. Cambodian National Volleyball League (Disabled):

  • 1996-2009: Evolution from two Phnom Penh-based teams to an annual 10-team, National League Competition broadcast live-to-air from National Olympic Stadium sponsored entirely by the corporate sector.

4. Cambodian National Standing Volleyball Team:

CNVLD initiated first ever participation in international sporting competitions of Cambodian Athletes with a Disability via the Cambodian National Standing Volleyball Team.

  • 1999: FESPIC Games, Bangkok, Thailand, Position: Silver medal.
  • 2000: Paralympic Games, Sydney Australia, Position: 7th .
  • 2001:WOVD Slovakia World Cup, Position: 5th.
  • 2002: FESPIC Games, Busan, Korea, Position: Gold.
  • 2004: WOVD Rhodes, Greece Volleyball World Cup, Position: 4th.
  • 2004: German Friendship Games: German Parliament (der Bundestag).
  • 2005: Successfully bid for and implemented hosting of WOVD 2005 Asia-Pacific Championships, Cambodia, Position: Gold - Cambodia becomes #1 Asia-Pacific after defeating Australia in the Final.
  • 2005: WOVD Regina, Canada World Cup, Position: 4th.
  • 2007:  Hosted WOVD 2007 Phnom Penh, Cambodia Standing Volleyball World Cup 24.11.07-02.12.07, the first ever World Cup teams sports event to be held in the nation. Six nations participated. Cambodia took bronze to take #3 in the World.
  • 2009: Hosting 2009 Cambodia WOVD Volleyball World Cup – 6 Nations: Cambodia, Germany, Slovakia, Poland, Malaysia, India

  • 2002: International Fair Play Diploma of Honour (UNESCO).
  • 2004: Swiss Academy for Development Best Practices Award.
  • 2006: United Nations Best Practices Award for Sports and Development for the 2005 UN International Year of Sport
  • 2007: Nominated 2007 Australian National Disability Awards
  • 2007: Britannica Enclopaedia Celebration of Life Through Sports Award
  • 2008: Global Finalists Nike-Changemakers Sport for a Better World Competition
  • 2008: CNVLD initiates first ever National Disability Awards
  • 2009: Global Finalists Nike-Changemakers Gamechangers Women in Sport Competition
